Zika virus: Kanpur records 30 new cases, tally escalates to 66

KANPUR: Thirty more Zika cases have been reported in Uttar Padesh's Kanpur on Thursday.

As many as 66 people have been tested positive in the city since the detection of the first case of Zika virus on Oct 23.

The 30 new cases have been reported from the tests conducted at the virology lab of the KGMU Lucknow and National Institute of Virology, Pune. Of the new cases, three of the infected are women and 27 are men comprising children, young and elderly.

Till Wednesday, the number of women, including four girls, was 18, with three more infected, the number of women patients have now escalated to 21.

The 30 infected persons hail from Harjinder Nagar and Air Force premises. Adarsh nagar is the most affected by Zika virus, so far the majority of Zika cases have been reported from there only. The district administration has launched a massive source reduction programme.

The Civic and Health departments in the district has been directed to perform an all-out effort to eradicate the mosquito population to curb the spread of the disease.

CMO Dr Nepal Singh said that King George's Medical University(KGMU) in Lucknow and National Institute of Virology, Pune on Thursday have confirmed 30 more persons contracting the disease.

District Magistrate Kanpur nagar Vishak G Iyer said that Zika virus infection has been confirmed in 30 more people on Thursday. "The total tally has now reached 66. Source reduction and door-to-door sampling and cleaning are being done continuously by medical teams and surveillance teams. People have been advised to check mosquito breeding. They have also been appealed to cooperate with the Civic and Health departments team in eliminating the breeding points and larvae of mosquitoes," DM said further.
