ZA/UM Confirms Layoffs After 'Zero Parades' Fails to Achieve Commercial Success Despite Critical Acclaim

ZA/UM Studio has confirmed another round of layoffs following the commercial performance of "Zero Parades: For Dead Spies," despite the game earning widespread critical acclaim.

Reviewers indeed praised its storytelling, atmosphere, and narrative design, but there's more to discover behind these praises. The title reportedly failed to generate the sales needed to meet the studio's financial expectations.

The latest workforce reduction adds to a turbulent period for the developer best known for "Disco Elysium." Over the past several years, ZA/UM has faced leadership changes, legal disputes, canceled projects, and ongoing organizational challenges that have reshaped the studio.

Zero Parades Receives Critical Acclaim But Misses Sales Targets

Released to positive reviews, "Zero Parades: For Dead Spies" quickly gained recognition as one of the year's standout narrative-driven games.

Critics praised its ambitious writing, immersive world-building, and emotional storytelling, reinforcing ZA/UM's reputation for creating unique role-playing experiences.

However, strong reviews did not translate into the commercial success the company had hoped for.

ZA/UM confirmed that it has issued redundancy and at-risk notices affecting up to 32 employees across multiple departments. The studio also stated that it is working closely with its labor union to provide support and guidance to employees affected by the restructuring.

ZA/UM Continues to Navigate Years of Internal Challenges

The layoffs are the latest setback for a studio that has experienced significant instability since 2022.

That year, "Disco Elysium" creators Robert Kurvitz, Aleksander Rostov, and Helen Hindpere announced that they had involuntarily left ZA/UM. The departures sparked a highly publicized legal dispute, with Kurvitz and Rostov alleging they had been wrongfully removed from the company.

ZA/UM denied those claims and accused Kurvitz of misconduct, including allegations related to the studio's intellectual property. Although the legal proceedings were eventually resolved, the conflict created lasting uncertainty surrounding the future of the company and its flagship franchise.

Disco Elysium's Legacy Remains Influential

Despite the studio's recent struggles, "Disco Elysium" remains one of the most acclaimed role-playing games ever released. Its innovative dialogue system, complex storytelling, and deep character development continue to influence narrative-focused game design.

According to Kotaku, plans for a direct sequel never fully materialized as internal disputes disrupted development and several projects were ultimately canceled.

Many former ZA/UM developers have since established independent studios, working on spiritual successors inspired by "Disco Elysium's" storytelling philosophy. Those projects have attracted considerable attention from fans hoping to see the genre continue evolving beyond the original game.
