Youths repeatedly batter a rental bike in Cardiff in broad daylight

Police are appealing for information to identify a group of people who were filmed vandalising nextbike UK rental bikes in Cardiff.

South Wales Police said the incident happened at around 5.30pm on East Tyndall Street in Splott on Wednesday, 30 June.

An eight-second video posted on the the South Wales Police Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Facebook page shows a group of five young men at a nextbike station. One of them appears to be striking one of the bikes repeatedly with a hard object.

The vandals were filmed in the act by a member of the public who shared the video with nextbike. The bike sharing company then sent the video to officers who launched their appeal on 2 July.

According to nextbike UK Managing Director Krysia Solheim, this is not an isolated incident. The company has recorded 40 incidents of vandalism in total last month in Cardiff alone.

Ms Solheim said: "It's heartbreaking and frustrating to see our bikes being targeted by vandals in this way. Our crews work incredibly hard to maintain the fleet for the city, and this behaviour makes their job extremely difficult. Every bike that is damaged like this is a bike that is unavailable for Cardiff's nextbike community to use to get around the city. We refuse to let the small minority of people ruin the scheme for everyone. I'd urge anyone with information to step forward to get in touch with the police on 101."

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "We are appealing for information on an incident that happened on Wednesday 30th June at around 5.30pm, at East Tyndall Street, Splott."
