Cop a load of Sofia Coppola's cashmere
It’s not surprising the preternaturally elegant Sofia Coppola’s films — the latest of which, Priscilla, is out in January — are supremely stylish affairs. ‘How they dress tells you something about them,’ she says of her characters. That energy is something she has brought into another creative project, designing a capsule for Barrie, the 120-year-old Scottish cashmere manufacturer that is part of Chanel’s Métiers d’Art houses. For the collection — which includes a candy pink all-in-one, patch pocket jackets and perfect striped sweaters — Coppola worked with Barrie artistic director Augustin Dol-Maillot, ‘in a similar way I do with a costume designer,’ she explains. ‘I have an idea of the character and some ideas of what they might wear and then the designer proposes what they think in that spirit. I really enjoy that I can ask for what I have in mind, and they have the expertise to interpret an idea into reality’.

Instigated by Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini Fendi, the series of collections gives pals of the house an opportunity to reinterpret the label’s codes and signatures. First up? Stefano Pilati (‘one of the designers I admire most,’ says Jones), who has curated a collection that merges bourgeois Milanese elegance with Roman freedom, rigour with ease. ‘I was thinking about the 1920s and the parallels with today, particularly the flapper,’ says Pilati. ‘I wanted to find that connection.’ Mission accomplished.
