As an Everton fan, I mentally hissed at the Steven Gerrard cover, laughed at the idea of him in a “black suit and makeup”, fondly remembered the “proper abuse” he got at Goodison Park, and found myself humming the Demba Ba song after reading the piece. All are reactions that could be provoked only by an opposition player who was truly great.

The Steven Gerrard interview failed to resonate: the appalling tackles, the routine manipulation of referees and his failed attempts as a DJ are what stick in the memory.

It is an excellent idea to transform old concentration camps into new refugee camps. If all people are treated with warm concern, new Germans would make Germany an even better land than it is now.

Surgery doesn’t get to the root cause of why young people are overweight . This time last year, I had a BMI of over 45 and was a prime candidate for bariatric surgery. I am so proud that, with a slimming plan and exercise, I have been able to stop seeing food as a source of comfort and lost almost nine stone in 10 months. I can now lead a normal life, which those with gastric bands, relying on vitamins for basic nutrients, can’t.

What is it about democracy that Sophie Heawood doesn’t understand? I voted for Jeremy Corbyn not because he’s a man, but because he proposed policies I would love to see enacted. To vote for a woman on the grounds that she is a woman, irrespective of her policies, would be undemocratic and wrong.

Angus and Max omitted to say they got 15 in the Quiz at our wedding in July. Did they have help this time, too?

Nanette Wise was interviewed by the foreign office “soon after” war broke out, yet began work in 1944. Why did it take five years?
