Nigella Lawson talks about how, if she didn’t eat a meal, it would be served up again at the next meal. The same happened to me, except my mother fried it all up for breakfast and again at lunch. It made me hate the original food all the more (usually mince) and I got a weird kick out of annoying her by refusing it every time. I have never inflicted this on my kids.

My daughter completed her science degree in Maastricht last year, and at her graduation was called a “pioneer” of the new English-speaking course . It was a great opportunity, but “free”? With no loan available, and jobs restricted due to the language barrier, we had to come up with £800-£1,000 a month for books, fees, accommodation and living expenses. It was worth it, but you have to be able to afford it.

So, market-savvy UK students are studying abroad to avoid tuition fees and debts. One wonders how they will vote when they return home. Parties that combine low income tax with high tuition fees seem to find converts in unexpected quarters.

I don’t agree with Irene O’Mally’s comments about Helen Mirren. Stating that you looked better when young is just being realistic; it doesn’t mean you’re not happy with how you look now. And not caring is not the same as not taking care: I don’t care what people think, but I do like to look good.

May I have the itinerary of Sophie Heawood’s father’s trip to America? At only 70, I’m not old enough yet, but it sounds great fun.

Like Sophie Heawood’s dad, I am 83, and would love to know which travel insurance firm covered his trip. I have difficulty getting insurance for Europe at a reasonable price.

I usually agree with Bim Adewunmi’s Crush Of The Week, but not last week. She mentioned slimy Anton, but not one word of newcomer Gleb, who can only be described as a divine being. (A photo will suffice as an apology.)
