Young woman rescued by helicopter in Bonhill after taking unwell

A young woman was rescued by helicopter from the hills above Bonhill at the weekend after taking ill.

The female, in her 20s, was with friends when she became unwell.

They called for help and wrapped her up while awaiting on emergency services arriving.

The Coastguard’s Search and Rescue helicopter from Prestwick was sent to assist with the rescue.

Stewart Harris, Helensburgh and Lomond community first responder from Alexandria, along with an ambulance crew on foot, were first on the scene after receiving the call at 8pm on Saturday.

He said: “The girls did the right thing. They wrapped her up and looked after her. They didn’t panic and called for the emergency services.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call on Saturday at 1959 hours to attend an incident in Alexandria.

“We dispatched several resources including our special operations team to assist with a female patient in her 20s.

“The patient was airlifted by the Coastguard to Glasgow Airport before being transported to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.”

According to Stewart, the helicopter arrived at around 10.10pm and, after airlifting the woman to safety, they returned for the other females as well as him.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard confirmed their involvement, saying: “Just after 9.30pm on Saturday, the Prestwick Search and Rescue helicopter was sent to assist the Ambulance Service with the transport of a patient from Pappert Hill.”
