Young relative of convicted murderer John Dundon was target of broad daylight shooting in Limerick

A young violent relative of convicted gangland murderer John Dundon was the target of a broad daylight gun attack in Limerick.

The young criminal, who is seen as the heir to the throne of the Dundon gang was in a garden with several pals when a gunman blasted shots in his direction.

The alleged gunman, is suspected to be related to the Keane gang who were once sworn enemies of the deadly Dundon gang.

A deadly gang feud between the McCarthy/Dundon gang and Keane/Collopy drug gangs resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people in the early 2000s.

A source said: "This young man, who gardai fear has been involved in serious criminality, was in the garden of a house on Hyde Road where the Dundon gang lived.

"The gunman, who is linked to the Keane's did a drive by shooting - no one was injured but there was damage to a house.

"Gardai reacted immediately and a man was arrested. The fear, of course, is that this could be a restart of the Limerick gang feud of old but at the moment gardai are monitoring the situation."

One critical aspect to the investigation is a massive amount of garda and council CCTV systems placed in the area.

The Hyde Road area, in Ballinacurra Weston, near Limerick's train station, was the seat of the Dundon gang.

The previous feud saw gardai launched a huge successful crackdown on the Keane/Collopy gang and McCarthy/Dundon gangs in the early 2000s.

It is believed that 20 murders happened after Eddie Ryan was shot dead in November, 2000 at the Moose Bar in Limerick.

The feud was centred around the Moyross and Ballinacurra Weston areas where the McCarthy/Dundon side lived.

The opposing faction lived generally in the Saint Munchin's Park area - also known locally as the Island Field.

In one dramatic episode Eddie Ryan's sons were allegedly kidnapped as part of a supposed double cross strategy to target gang boss Kieran Keane.

In January 2003 Eddie Junior and Kieran 'Rashers' Ryan were bundled into a van.

The theory explored by gardai was that the Dundon mob had offered to shoot the brothers. It was believed Kieran Keane offered to pay €60,000 in return for the Ryan brothers' murder.

It was in fact a double cross and was used to lead Kieran Keane into a trap - he was subsequently murdered.

John Dundon is serving life for the murder of innocent rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

Dundon called one of his rivals, Philip Collopy, claiming to have killed the intended target John McNamara who lived in the estate. But it later emerged that Dundon’s gunmen had missed their target and killed the innocent man.

In a statement, gardai said: "Gardaí at Roxboro Road have arrested a man following a shooting incident in Limerick on Thursday 23rd May, 2019.

"At approximately 6.15pm a shot was fired during an incident in the front garden of a house on Hyde Road, Limerick.

"It’s understood a number of people were in the garden at the time of the incident. No one was injured.

"In a follow up search operation, Gardaí arrested a man (mid 20's) near the scene a short time later.

"He is currently detained at Roxboro Road Garda Station under Section 30, Offences against the State Act, 1939.

"The scene was preserved overnight for technical examination and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station 061-214340 or the Garda confidential Line 1800 666 111."
