Young Leeds United striker seals permanent exit as he joins Carlisle

Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson has sealed a permanent switch to League Two side Carlisle United. Edmondson has signed a two-year-deal at Brunton Park, joining the club on a free transfer, with Leeds retaining a sell-on clause in any future move.

The 21-year-old has spent much of the last two seasons out on loan from Elland Road, gaining experience at Aberdeen, Northampton Town, Fleetwood Town and Port Vale. His spell at the latter was the most successful as he scored three goals in the second half of the season to help the Valiants win promotion to League One via the play-offs.

The 21-year-old originally joined Leeds from York City as a youngster and became the club’s third youngest ever player when he came off the bench in a 2-0 win over QPR on the final day of the 2017/18 season. He went onto play just once more for the Whites first team in a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City but at 21, already has a plethora of senior experience under his belt.

Edmondson will be linking up with his former England U19 boss Paul Simpson at Carlisle, who is a huge fan of the striker after handing him three caps for the Young Lions. Simpson told carlisleunited.co.uk that he is looking forward to working with Edmondson again.

He said: “I think Ryan is a really good signing for us. He’s a player I know, he was involved in my England U19s, so I know of him and I’ve watched a lot of him.

“He’s had a bit of an up and down time with his loan moves, some have worked and some haven’t. He was unfortunate up at Aberdeen that he got injured.

“I wanted a big target man, he’s a bit of a throwback, but I wanted an old-school number 9. He absolutely works his socks off, he can get goals and get on the end of things.

“He can hold it up and create, and he’s a bloody pest for centre backs. He had a year left at Leeds and when we enquired about him I actually thought it would be too big of an ask, but I could only ask. The minute I spoke to his agent then eventually spoke to Ryan, and they were absolutely up for it.”
