'You shop at Hull' - How Liverpool's rivals got it VERY wrong about Andy Robertson

It didn't take long for the trolls to surface after Andy Robertson signed for Liverpool.

The Scot was posing for the cameras with his newly signed Liverpool contract after arriving from Hull City in an £8m deal when the comments began to pour in.

One exclaimed: "You shop at Hull!"

"Tinpot club," another mocked.

"Imagine signing a player from a relegated club," was the response of another.

There were more. Many more. Admittedly, the responses came from fans of a number of other clubs - Manchester United mostly, but a number of Man City fans chuckled, a Southampton fan labelled Robertson a "s*** Ryan Bertrand" and even an Aston Villa supporter got involved, claiming that Jordan Amavi would have been a better signing.

Among Liverpool fans the response was mixed. A number simply wished Robertson good luck, one or two correctly predicted his success - but many others questioned the wisdom of the signing.

Two years to the day since Robertson made the move, many of those trolls and naysayers could be forgiven for scrambling to delete their tweets.

How wrong they were.

Liverpool had done their homework. They knew what they were getting. But Robertson and Jurgen Klopp would have to show patience before the new boy could finally show what he could do.

Patience is a virtue for Klopp and Liverpool, as they have proven since, and Robertson would eventually get his chance when Alberto Moreno was injured in December, and he's not looked back since.

From playing for Queens Park in the Scottish Third Division to starring for Liverpool in two Champions League finals, Robertson's rise to become one of Europe's best left-backs is well documented.

It's easy to forget how many questioned his signing - but that is testament to Robertson's hard work and Liverpool's patience.

The trolls have gone quiet - silenced by the man from Scotland.
