‘You’re holding employees hostage’: California shoppers arrive at Costco 12 minutes before close for ‘essentials.’ Then they prove viewers right by picking up Poppi

A woman runs into a California Costco just 12 minutes before the warehouse closes to pick up some “essentials.” However, another TikToker calls her out for purchasing extras so close to the end of business hours.

In a video with over 1.4 million views, TikToker Candacce (@candacce) stitches a video by Ash, in which she goes into Costco at 8:17 p.m.

Ash sprints into the store with her partner and quickly packs essentials like bananas, eggs, paper towels, dish soap, and milk. However, Candacce is skeptical that the pair only went into Costco for these grocery essentials.

Did she buy anything besides ‘essentials’ at Costco?

Ash turns onto a different aisle and picks up a pack of probiotic soda alternative, Poppi.

“And to think we even gave you a chance,” Candacce says. “We believed in you. Now you’re just playing in our faces.” She suggests that Costco workers will go home late because the pair stays past closing to shop for non-essential items.

The pair also grab frozen pizzas, lemonade, ranch, Sun Chips, and Q-tips.

“You’re holding Costco employees hostage,” Candacce suggests.

By the time Ash and her partner make it to the checkout lanes, it’s already store closing time.

However, that isn’t the end of their trip. A Costco worker stops them at the exit to check their receipt, which is a standard practice at the warehouse.

“Guys, they think we’re stealing,” Ash says. The worker verifies their receipt, and the pair exit the store at 8:47 p.m., 17 minutes after closing.

“Y’all are some of the worst customers,” Candacce remarks. “At the expense of the Costco employees. What did they do to you?”

What do workers think of the late shopping trip?

In the comments of Candacce’s video, retail workers share their frustrations with customers who come into the store right before closing.

“As a retail employee this INFURIATES ME,” a commenter says.

“I used to work at Costco. Our store was CLOSED. This couple grabbed their food. And starting sitting in the food court area and eating pizza! AFTER CLOSE,” another shares.

“As someone worked in retail for a long time and hasn’t worked in retail also in many years. I will never walk in a store 10 min before closing. I used to hate last min customers and refuse to become one,” a third adds.

However, some say they don’t mind if a customer leaves a few minutes after store hours.

“Costco employee here, we don’t care majority of us still stay until 11 to restock the store anyways so an extra 15 minutes don’t hurt us,” one writes.

“I work at Costco and honestly it doesn’t even matter. At my store at least we push people out a couple of minutes after close so it hardly makes any difference. Anyone who’s off work at close still leaves and those who are scheduled post close just cover or a manager will close the till,” a second explains.
