'You're a true champion': President Ram Nath Kovind congratulates Neeraj Chopra for winning silver medal in World Championships

NEW DELHI: "You're a true champion", President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, on Sunday said in his congratulatory message to Neeraj Chopra for winning silver medal in men's javelin throw at World Athletics Championships.

The 24-year-old Tokyo Olympics gold medallist, Chopra, scripted history by becoming only the second Indian and first male track and field athlete from the country to win a medal at the World Championships. Long-jumper Anju Bobby George was until now the only Indian to have won a medal at the World Championships.

Anju won a bronze medal in the 2003 edition of the tournament.

"Neeraj Chopra continues to bring laurels and make the country proud! Heartiest congratulations on a historic sporting accomplishment and winning silver medal in men's javelin throw at World Athletics Championships. You're a true champion!," Kovind tweeted.

Neeraj Chopra's fourth attempt of 88.13m won him the silver medal, behind gold medallist Anderson Peters (90.54m) of Grenada.

Jakub Vadlejch (88.09m) of the Czech Republic won bronze.
