Harry Wilson admits he jumped at the chance to join Cardiff City on loan last season after learning he would not get regular game- time with Liverpool.
The attacker joined the Bluebirds late on in last year's summer transfer window after fearing he could miss out on a place in Wales' Euro 2020 squad if he stayed at Anfield.
Wilson scored seven goals in his 37 Championship appearances for Cardiff last term - although he had to survive some difficult spells which included a dip in form that led to Neil Harris being replaced by Mick McCarthy.
But the 24-year-old believes his end-of-season form at club level proved to be the perfect build-up for his summer away with Wales at the Euros.
"Going into the season, I had the Euros in my head. I knew that was coming at the end of the season," he said.
"I knew I had to be somewhere where I was going to play regular football, make sure I had the minutes that I wanted. I knew being at Liverpool I wasn't going to get that.
"When the chance to go on loan came around, I knew I had to take it. To play for Cardiff, a Welsh team, was a great honour for me.
"This season, there were a lot of ups and downs. I think we started fairly well. We had a bit of a sticky spell in the middle, a change of manager, but then the last 12 or 13 games I feel I did well. I played regularly and scored a few towards the end.
"I was happy with the way the season finished and the minutes I got throughout."
Wilson still has two years left to run on his contract with Liverpool.
However, given the difficult nature of pipping the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to a regular starting berth on Merseyside, Wilson could well depart Liverpool once again later this summer - either on loan or on a permanent basis.
And the Corwen-born ace has confirmed he will sort out his club future when he returns home from the European Championships.
"When you come away with Wales, I only ever focus on the next game because I feel if you are to think about anything else you'd be silly, you can get distracted so my focus here is fully on Wales and making sure we get as far in this competition as we can," he explained.
"Once the competition has finished that's when I'll think about what's happening at club level."
Cardiff would love to bring the winger back to Cardiff City Stadium next season and although there is a realisation that chances would be slim, it isn't being entirely ruled out.
