Yomiuri poll: 76% support 2050 net-zero emissions target

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's goal of reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 was supported by 76% of respondents in a survey conducted by The Yomiuri Shimbun from Friday to Sunday.

Meanwhile, the approval rate for Suga's Cabinet was 69%, almost unchanged from the 67% recorded in a previous poll conducted from Oct. 16 to Oct. 18.

The Cabinet's disapproval rate was 22%, compared to 21% in October.

In a question on the future of Japan-U.S. relations, 55% said they were as concerned as they were hopeful, while 29% said they had more concerns than hopes, and 15% said they were more hopeful than concerned.

By Sunday morning, during the survey period, former Vice President Joe Biden's victory in the U.S. presidential election was clear.

In a survey conducted in November 2016 immediately after Donald Trump was elected president, people who said they had more concerns than hopes accounted for 58% of respondents. The percentage in the latest survey is half that figure.

The support rate for political parties was 48% for the Liberal Democratic Party, up from 42% in October, and 4% for the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, unchanged from the previous poll. Thirty-six percent of respondents supported no political party, 5 percentage points lower than in the previous poll.
