The two yokozuna remained unbeaten on Friday's sixth day at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, though neither was particular impressive in doing so.
Hakuho slapped down No. 2 maegashira Aoiyama (3-3) after an series of thrusts and slaps in the day's final bout, while Kakuryu worked Endo (2-4) to the bales before slapping the No. 2 maegashira down.
Ozeki Tochinoshin, who reclaimed the ozeki rank after the May tournament, withdrew from the Nagoya basho on Friday because of injuries to his left shoulder and right knee. He had suffered his fifth consecutive loss on Thursday.
No. 1 maegashira Asanoyama, who won the Emperor's Cup at the May tournament, suffered his fourth loss after sekiwake Tamawashi (1-5) pushed him out.
Meanwhile, No. 7 maegashira Tomokaze dropped from among the unbeaten as No. 5 maegashira Takarafuji (2-4) pulled him down.
Five wrestlers, including Tomokaze, ozeki Takayasu and No. 4 maegashira Ichinojo, trail the tournament-leading yokozuna with one loss.
