Yaya Sanogo sends transfer plea as ex-Arsenal youngster faces football's grim reality

Yaya Sanogo once scored for Arsenal in the Champions League, but now finds himself staring at the grim reality of football's scrapheap.

His goal against Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund, back in 2014, secured a 2-0 win for the Gunners and confirmed their passage into the last-16 of the competition.

Upon signing Sanogo in 2013, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said of his fellow Frenchman: "Sanogo is a good young signing for us.

"He has shown he has potential with his recent performances for Auxerre and also for the France Under-20 side.

"We are looking forward to Yaya joining us and continuing his promising development. He has a big future here, of course."

But that strike against Klopp's side would prove to be Sanogo's only goal in an Arsenal career that failed to live up to expectations.

Can Arsenal finish in the top four this term? Let us know in the comments

He made just two Premier League starts in his four years at the Emirates - being sent on loan to Crystal Palace and Charlton - before returning to his native France with Toulouse before nine games with Huddersfield last term.

The Terriers were battling to stay in the Championship and Sanogo was brought in to try and help Carlos Corberan's side address their scoring issues.

Corberan said at the time: "Yaya is a player who has a background in English football, something that can make his adaptation to the Championship easier.

“Physically he has a different profile to the strikers we already have in attack and it can help to increase the offensive versatility of the team.

“He has been training with a professional team in France from September until he made the journey to England, which means he should be in a better physical condition. He will still need a little time, and we will work with him to make him ready to help the team in the last part of the season.”

Ultimately however, the move to West Yorkshire didn't work out.

Sanogo would make just nine appearances for Town, failing to score a single goal. His disaster move was summed up when he missed a penalty in a goalless draw against Cardiff.

Huddersfield managed to scrape survival but Sanogo's stay was not extended.

The striker, now aged 29, is a free agent once again and has issued a come-and-get-me plea for a new club.

During an interview with La Depeche , Sanogo said: “Covid happened.

“I haven’t seen the list but there’s a lot players in this situation. Clubs have less money so they’re a bit more reticent - especially mid-season.

“I had contacts with certain clubs. Some didn’t interest me, others were thinking about it but didn’t follow up. It’s become very hard. I’ve a few contacts but they need to go somewhere.

"I’m ready since I’m training with Toulouse but I now need for someone to give me a chance."

Sanogo has claimed that French top flight team Clermont were interested in signing him in January but ultimately opted against it.

He added: "I told them that they just needed to call Toulouse to know my fitness levels. I was ready. It’s true that I lack game time - but I’m training every day.”

Without a goal since December 2019, the youngster that Wenger had briefly hoped could be Arsenal's future is desperate for someone to offer him another chance.
