Yankees give up pair of late homers, fall to Blue Jays

TORONTO _ The Yankees navigated one of the American League's top lineups fairly well Sunday, making, really, two mistakes all afternoon.

But they were costly, with both resulting in home runs that sent the Bombers to a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays in front of a sellout crowd of 46,782 at Rogers Centre.

The Yankees (32-22), off on Monday, finished this seven-game trip 3-4.

Luis Severino was cruising heading into the sixth, holding a 2-0 lead. But the Blue Jays (28-29) tied with two outs in the inning when Kendrys Morales singled and Justin Smoak hit a mammoth homer to center for his 14th of the season.

The blast snapped a streak of four straight games without a homer allowed by Severino, who allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings.

The 23-year-old right-hander, who came in 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his previous five starts, struck out seven and walked one. Severino has struck out 33 and walked nine over his last three games.

Josh Donaldson continued providing a spark since coming off the DL a week ago, blasting a leadoff homer in the eighth off Tyler Clippard to make it 3-2. It was Donaldson sixth homer, third since returning to the lineup.

Roberto Osuna struck out the side in the ninth, starting with Aaron Judge, allowing the right-hander to collect his 13th save.

Patchogue-Medford's Marcus Stroman, despite a high pitch count early, gave Toronto six innings, allowing two runs and five hits over five innings. Stroman, who came in 6-2 with a 3.28 ERA, struck out four and walked one.
