Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez diagnosed with the flu, expected to miss a week of action

TAMPA, Fla. _ Gary Sanchez's return from a sore back was sidetracked by the flu Tuesday.

The catcher had a fever on Monday night and then was diagnosed with the flu on Tuesday afternoon. That means he will miss at least a week of games.

"So he'll be re-evaluated on Friday, so he'll be ... away from us for the next couple days." Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "So we'll see where he's at at that point."

Boone said that because he was diagnosed with the flu there was no need to test him for the coronavirus.

Sanchez reported the soreness in his lower and middle back Saturday morning after catching in back-to-back games for the first time this spring. Sanchez and Boone both said they were not concerned about the back being a long-term issue.
