Yamaha Motor Corporation USA is recalling a certain batch of 2026 TW200s because of a potential speedometer failure issue. On the affected range of bikes, 'inappropriate materials' were apparently used (that's how it's phrased in the recall, which we're quoting directly here), which may not be sufficiently hard to stand up to the tightening forces required to ensure the front axle shaft is sufficiently torqued down. As a result, the meter gear unit assembly (as it's called) may deform and not operate correctly while the rider is using the bike.
As a result, the rotation of the tire may not be transmitted to the speedometer as it should be. This could, in turn, distract the rider because it's either not operating properly or not operating at all. If a rider can't accurately assess the speed at which the bike is traveling, this could also increase the risk of crash, injury, and/or death.
Approximately 962 bikes are included in this recall, which represents 100% of the population. Affected bikes were a specific range of 2026 TW200s manufactured between June 2, 2025 and July 31, 2025. Bikes manufactured before or after this range do not have this issue, according to Yamaha. Additionally, units produced beginning in August 2025 were manufactured with an improved component that meets the specific hardness requirements needed for this application.
The Part 573 Recall Report that Yamaha filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Association stated that it planned to notify its dealer network between April 10, 2026 and April 13, 2026. Additionally, the company planned to notify registered owners of affected bikes between April 10, 2026 and April 13, 2026 as well. The VIN should be searchable in the NHTSA database as of April 17, 2026.
Owners will be instructed to contact their local authorized Yamaha dealers to schedule a recall repair service, which will consist of replacement of the affected speedometer drive gear with the corrected, strengthened component. This work will be performed at no cost to the customer.
Interestingly, Yamaha also notes that "repair campaign will remain open, and repairs will be honored for the foreseeable future. Yamaha intends to make remedy components available for approximately 15 years or until all affected units have been modified."
In the company's Technical Bulletin to its dealer network about this issue, it notes specific procedures that all Yamaha dealers should follow to determine that each and every unit that passes through that dealer's hands receives the recall service, and also has it noted in the dealer computer system. The Technical Bulletin also notes that it is a violation of Yamaha policy for dealerships to deliver any affected units to customers until the procedures in this bulletin are performed.
