
Farmers place bundles of rice stalks on rows of poles to dry in the sun on the rice terrace known as "Owarabi no tanada" in Yamanobe, Yamagata Prefecture, on Monday. This traditional method of sun drying, called "kuikake," dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867). Over 1,000 upright wooden poles, each about 2 meters high, stand in neat rows.
