XR Kill the Bill protesters blocked Bristol traffic by sitting outside police station

Extinction Rebellion protesters briefly blocked traffic in Bristol as part of the eighth 'Kill the Bill' demonstration in the city centre.

They sat down in the road outside Bridewell Police Station, although they moved on for a picnic in College Green.

The eco-warriors are protesting against the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which would take powers away from protesters.

The movement comprises of a mix of people including the 'Elders', a group of grandparents, and the 'Families' group, who are parents and children.

They have been marching through the city centre since just before noon.

They blocked the A38 main road through Bristol, outside Bridewell Police Station, by sitting in the road.

They also blocked the traffic on Park Street during their march.

The protesters have marched into College Green and the bottom of Park Street, and are gathering next to City Hall where they have elected to have picnic in the green rather than in the road.

Mother and member of XR Families, Chloe Naldrett said: “I’m bringing my children up to think and speak for themselves.

“I don’t want them to live in a world where they are afraid to raise their voices for fear of being criminalized.

"They have every right to speak out about the things that affect the world they are inheriting. We are protesting today against this bill because their future is too important for us to stay silent.”

Traffic and travel service Inrix reported delays for motorists on College Street, saying at 1pm: "Delays due to Extinction Rebellion demonstration on College Street at Bristol City Council.

"Protesters are now outside the city hall and are currently off the road."

Updates of the Kill the Bill protest are being posted here.
