WVU’s Martin named Big 12 Player of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb 4, 2019) — After leading the West Virginia University women’s basketball team to a pair of Big 12 wins last week, Tynice Martin has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

It marks the third time overall and the second time this season the redshirt junior guard has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as she previously took home the honor on Jan. 14. It is her fifth weekly honor from the league, as she was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week on two occasions in 2016.

Martin averaged 24.5 points per game with 10 rebounds and three steals as the Mountaineers (16-5, 7-3) picked up a pair of key wins. On Monday, the Atlanta native scored a season-high 27 points to lead WVU to a 64-58 upset of No. 12 Texas. She went 7-of-8 with a pair of 3-pointers to set a program record with 16 points in the first quarter as the Mountaineers went on to claim their first-ever win at Texas.

Later in the week, Martin posted a team-high 22 points in the Mountaineers’ 71-50 win over Kansas. She hit a season-high nine shots at the free-throw line, shooting 90 percent and added five rebounds and a steal. She now boasts a total of nine 20-point games on the season.

Martin and the Mountaineers travel to Ames, Iowa, to face No. 22 Iowa State on Saturday.
