A day after India's top wrestlers once again sat down in protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Sports Ministry declared the proposed May 7 elections of the WFI null and void. In effect, the WFI ceases to exist for now.
A transitory or ad-hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will be formed to hold elections to WFI's Executive Council within 45 days of the formation of the committee.
The Mary Kom-led six-member Oversight Committee's findings have revealed that there was no proper Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the WFI and that there was no adequate mechanism for grievance redressal.
Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, along with Vinesh Phogat, are among the wrestlers sitting in protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
