'Worst of all worlds': Kate Forbes slams Kemi Badenoch North Sea oil vow

DEPUTY First Minister Kate Forbes has slammed Kemi Badenoch's vow to extract all North Sea oil as "the worst of all worlds".

The Conservative Party leader is in Aberdeen on Tuesday, where she is set to make a speech detailing her plans to make North Sea oil and gas as the "cornerstone" of the UK's economy.

She is also set to call for a complete move away from net zero policies, as well as renaming the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) the North Sea Authority.

Ahead of the speech, Forbes said "the justice of a just transition is lost on Westminster politicians".

She warned that figures such as Badenoch, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage viewed oil and gas extraction as "draining every pound of Scotland's natural resources without giving a single penny back".

Forbes also urged Starmer to visit Aberdeen and speak to energy workers, after First Minister John Swinney accepted an invitation to co-chair an emergency summit in the city with the Prime Minister, who is yet to respond.

Speaking ahead of Badenoch's speech, Forbes said: "We have an opportunity in front of us to develop and harness Scotland's offshore sector in a way that delivers jobs, economic growth and energy security not just for the next 10 years, but for the next 100.

Forbes said the next chapter for Scotland's energy sector "must be written carefully and considerately", by "recognising the renewables jobs of tomorrow only come by protecting the world class offshore industry we have today".

"The justice of a just transition is lost on Westminster politicians, who are risking the worst of all worlds in our future," she added.

The Deputy First Minister added: “Industry experts and trade unions have explicitly blamed the Labour Government's fiscal regime for hundreds of recent job losses with an expert report warning the oil and gas industry could lose up to 400 jobs every two weeks for the next five years unless action is taken.

"What that means is a cliff edge for energy workers, and the fact that it took Donald Trump to bring Keir Starmer to Aberdeen for the first time since his election as Prime Minister speaks volumes."

Forbes said that while the opportunities of net zero are "enormous",  they would not be realised if confidence and investment in the sector is lost.

She added: "In contrast, the Government that I represent is clear that a transition which leaves people and jobs behind is no transition. It is a betrayal.”

Stephen FlynnStephen Flynn SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn also condemned Badenoch's plans, as he said Westminster is driving Scotland's energy sector "down a road to ruin".

He said: "On their travels north to size-up Scotland’s energy wealth Labour, Tory and Reform politicians have finally found unity – by all getting it completely wrong. Westminster is driving Scotland's energy sector down a road to ruin.

“The Labour Party run a real risk of shutting down a world leading industry with no replacement in place, while the Tories and Reform want to leave us with absolutely nothing to replace it once the wells eventually run dry."

Flynn said Westminster politicians "need to stop treating Scotland's energy wealth as an expendable asset", and instead back the transition to renewables.

He added: "Despite his promises, under Keir Starmer energy-rich Scotland faces the absurd situation where our energy bills are going up by hundreds of pounds, while energy jobs are being destroyed not created.

"It's no wonder more and more Scots are concluding the only way we can use our industry to benefit people who live here is through independence."
