World Cup: Jos Buttler positive about England's future, wants to stay captain

PUNE: Jos Buttler may not have had the results he had expected before the World Cup began, however, the England skipper is hopeful of changing the fortunes of his team and leading from the front.

England have failed to reach the semifinals and defend their title, but Buttler said he is keen to continue as the white-ball captain for England's future assignments.

"Yeah, I'd like to," Buttler said when asked if he intends to lead the side for the Caribbean tour in December. "I know Rob Key (managing director of England's men's cricket) arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I'd like to," Buttler added.

The wicketkeeper-batter said that not scoring runs has been frustrating for him. England defeated The Netherlands by 160 runs on Wednesday, courtesy Ben Stokes, who made 108. Buttler has aggregated only 111 runs from eight matches. He however hopes to improve in the coming days. "You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance. So, yeah, very frustrated, again, not to contribute, but I'll stick to the stuff that's served me well over a long period of time when I've had these little runs of form and, like I say, hopefully come out the other side of it very soon," he said.

About England's losing streak of five matches in the World Cup, Buttler said it was good to snap the negative run.

"Yeah, it's great. It's not enjoyable losing games of cricket. Any game you play. I'm competitive, I want to win, whether it's a game of cards or a game of cricket. It's nice to end that sequence and we go to Kolkata. Not playing for what we wanted to be playing for, but a vital match for us in the grand scheme of things. It's great to be heading there with something on the line," he said referring to the Champions Trophy qualification.

Buttler couldn't pin-point one thing that went against England. "I think everyone's been frustrated, but the guys have stayed tight, everyone's stayed really close and kept working hard. I think if you watched training yesterday, the guys probably trained as hard as they trained all trip, which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right. You don't get to the level of players that we've got in the squad without having that personal pride and work ethic and determination to put things right when they're not going the way you want.

"I guess we just hung in there and trusted ourselves and put trust in the guys that at some point the wheel will turn. Keep trying to deliver the same messages and play committed to the style we want to."
