Iran hit back twice to draw 2-2 against New Zealand in their politically-charged and entertaining World Cup 2026 match in Los Angeles.
The All Whites struck early once the whistle sounded though, with Elijah Just’s thumping strike capping off a fine move led by Chris Wood. But Iran levelled thanks to Ramin Rezaeian and they almost took the lead on the stroke of half-time, but Ali Nemati was called offside after planting a header into the corner. The All Whites went ahead once more after another slick move from Just, but Mohammad Mohebi’s header equalised once more.
A Fifa ban on Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag was upheld on Monday, though thousands of Iranians sported the flag at the Los Angeles Stadium. Iran’s captain Mehdi Taremi has criticised Fifa for the impact that his nation’s war with co-hosts USA had on their preparation. And the Iranian national anthem was booed loudly from both Iranian Americans and Americans in attendance.
Iranian protesters have also vowed to disrupt the match to show their displeasure at the brutal ruling regime, with plans to boo the anthem and turn their backs to display currently prohibited pre-revolutionary flags. If that happens, there is a chance the match could be halted, with Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei under specific instructions from the country’s government to stop play if pre-revolutionary flags are brandished or if negative chanting is audible. This match is more than just the action on the pitch especially following Donald Trump’s announcement of a US-Iran peace agreement. FT: Iran 2-2 New Zealand

A point apiece and probably a fair result in LA.
Both sides were excellent in spells, but may bemoan the chance missed to top the group and take a giant step towards the knockouts.
A good result for Scotland? The more draws the better for Steve Clarke’s side, should they require one of those third-place spots.

90 mins: Iran 2-2 New Zealand
A minimum of five minutes added on...
A long ball to Wood, then Singh gallops up to collect the ball. Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh snaps at the ankles to force a turnover.
A long throw into the box creates havoc in and around Wood, too.

It’s still open, a free-flowing game and both teams still pushing for a winner.
Iran look the more likely, Hosseinzadeh with a curling shot, but it’s straight down the throat of the ‘keeper.

GOAL! It’s magic from Elijah Just, a beautiful combination with Chris Wood.

The Iranian national anthem was booed by some spectators inside the SoFI Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday evening as Iran began their World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Group G.

OFFSIDE! Nemati goes early, way early, and that’s why he has time and space in the box as Iran swing a late free-kick in.

CLOSE! Iran nearly expose Crocombe’s blunder. The Millwall goalkeeper is too relaxed on the ball as Mohebi closes him down.
The loose ball then falls to Ghoddos who loops one up and over towards the empty net with Crocombe out of his goal. It’s narrowly wide.
Ghoddos then smashes the ball towards goal but can’t control the power. Iran on top now.

The surreal possibility hanging over Iran’s perilous World Cup campaign
01:44 , Chris Wilson
Delving into the history books, glazing over a 96-year story of international football’s top-tier event, not much looks out of place in analysing Iraq’s triumvirate of one-goal defeats at the 1986 World Cup. Nor Argentina’s disappointing second group stage exit in 1982, when Diego Maradona first flirted with the globe’s greatest stage. Yet their significance, some four decades on, is now pertinent as the tournament takes place in the United States.
Back then, Argentina and Iraq were two countries competing in the World Cup while embroiled in international warfare. Argentina surrendered in the Falklands War just one day after Spain ‘82 started and, mercifully, did not draw any of the three British teams taking part, while Iraq were in the midst of an eight-year war with Iran at Mexico ‘86. Tension between the two remains ubiquitous. Yet beyond civil conflicts, there have been no comparable examples since. “Football unites the world,” is the tired slogan continually belted out by Fifa president Gianni Infantino. Well, not this time.

Taremi speaks on preparations

“I have felt the tension from the first moment we arrived at this World Cup,” said Taremi ahead of Iran’s opening game.
“This kind of tension, it undermines that joy and it undermines the message of Fifa and our people, which is that football brings about peace. I feel like this World Cup could have provided a better atmosphere than it has, but I hope in the future it will be better for all fans, whatever team they are supporting in the World Cup,” he added.
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi criticises Fifa over impact of USA war at World Cup 2026
01:33 , Chris Wilson
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi says his team is having a challenging World Cup 2026 experience amid the multifold disruptions created by their nation's war with the U.S., the tournament's co-host.
The Iranians arrived in the Los Angeles area on Sunday from their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, just over the U.S. border — about 140 miles (225km) from the stadium where they will open group-stage play against New Zealand on Monday night. Iran's training camp was relocated from the U.S. after the war began, and the Iranian team has endured numerous distractions since then, including visa problems.

Why Fifa has banned Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag at World Cup 2026
01:31 , Jack Rathborn
Iranian Americans initiated protests at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles before Iran’s World Cup 2026 opener against New Zealand and others displayed the banned pre-revolutionary flag despite Fifa’s ban being upheld.
Some had called on Iranians to unite and forget politics but others displayed symbols of protest against the government.
After flying to the USA on Sunday from their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, a deal was announced to end the U.S.-Iran war. Los Angeles is the biggest home to the Iranian community outside of Iran after many fled the country following the Islamic Revolution.
The World Cup 2026 has left fans split, with some excited to see their team play football on the biggest stage of the sport, though others remain overwhelmingly angry at Tehran's crackdown on protesters, with concern over Washington's bombing campaign.

Trump says US-Iran peace deal signed but Israel rules out withdrawing from Lebanon

Donald Trump said a preliminary agreement to end America’s’ war with Iran has been signed by both sides as Israel vowed to keep its forces in Lebanon.
“The deal's all signed,” Trump said on Monday after he arrived in France for a summit of the G7 group of wealthy nations, adding that his vice president JD Vance would attend a formal signing ceremony in Geneva on Friday.
The agreement will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a ceasefire for 60 days, allowing negotiations on issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions.

New Zealand profile
01:11 , Chris Wilson
Star player – Chris Wood: The best footballer New Zealand have ever produced, Wood actually struggled with form and fitness this season, after scoring a stunning 20 Premier League goals in 2024-25. On the flip side, it may mean he is fresh for this summer’s showpiece. Set-pieces and his aerial threat will be vital.
Breakout talent – Lachlan Bayliss: The 23-year-old only made his debut in March but could be important in New Zealand’s midfield engine room. Previously a regular for A-League team Newcastle Jets, he is now unattached after the expiration of his contract.
Fifa ranking: 85
Odds to win the World Cup: 1000/1.

Iran has threatened to halt matches if unofficial flags are brought in or slogans chanted.
New Zealand preview
01:06 , Chris Wilson
The lowest-ranked team at this summer’s World Cup, New Zealand have undoubtedly benefited from the tournament’s expansion and comfortably secured Oceania’s one guaranteed spot, with Australia long taking part in Asian qualifying.
It is their first appearance since South Africa 2010, when they memorably emerged as the only unbeaten side of the tournament, drawing all three of their group games. Chris Wood featured back then (at 18) and he is now (at 34) his country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 45 goals in 90 caps.
They will be led by English coach Darren Bazeley, who has even picked a player in English football’s non-league system: Braintree Town’s 36-year-old defender, Tommy Smith. The All Whites will be rigid in their shape and will pray for Wood to produce a moment of magic up top.
Iran profile

Star player – Mehdi Taremi: Now at Olympiacos after an impressive four-year stay at Porto, the onus will be on Taremi at the attacking end of the pitch. He had 10 goals and seven assists to his name in qualifying and, given Iran’s likely defensive set-up, his output will be vital if they are to progress.
Breakout talent – Mehdi Ghayedi: The flashy Al-Nasr (UAE, not Saudi Arabia) winger has long been heralded as a bright prospect but now, at 27, it is his time to shine. He does have an impressive record for his country: 10 goals in 30 appearances.
Fifa ranking: 20.
Odds to win the World Cup: 500/1.

The story of the tournament. Will they play? Will they be allowed in the US? Can they actually progress beyond the group? Well: yes, yes (sort of), and definitely yes.
Geo-politically, their participation is without precedent: playing in a World Cup while at war with a co-host. They have moved their base from Arizona to Mexico, near the US border in Tijuana.
Reports indicate they will have visas which only permit them in the US on the day of the games; they have two in Los Angeles (20-30 minute flight from Tijuana) and Seattle (three-hour flight from Tijuana). For obvious reasons, Iran will have a constant daily news cycle of their own.
On the sporting side, the biggest shock is the omission of striker Sardar Azmoun, once heralded as the “Iranian Messi”, who has an impressive strike rate of 57 goals in 91 caps. Local media reports suggest he has been expelled for a perceived act of disloyalty to the government, despite Iran’s vice president Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh pleading for his inclusion. Olympiacos star Mehdi Taremi will lead the attack instead.
World Cup VAR official releases statement after alleged white supremacist hand gesture
Tuesday 16 June 2026 00:44 , Chris Wilson
Fifa World Cup 2026 official Shaun Evans has denied “intentionally” making a gesture that some perceived to be connected to an expression of white supremacy.
The Australian referee, working as part of the VAR team in Dallas at the World Cup broadcast centre, was seen making an “OK” symbol with his right hand in front of his right leg when the official broadcast of Germany against Curaçao on Sunday cut away from pre-game footage to show the team of video review analysts.
The match, played in Houston, led to many complaints over the gesture, which sees a thumb and forefinger touched in a circle and other fingers outstretched and was interpreted as a hate symbol by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League in 2019.

Tunisia sack manager after heavy World Cup loss to Sweden
Tuesday 16 June 2026 00:38 , Chris Wilson
Tunisia have taken drastic measures following their 5-1 defeat to Sweden and have sacked manager Sabri Lamouchi with two World Cup 2026 group games still to play.
Lamouchi only took charge of the team in January and managed just five games before his dismissal. He won once, a 1-0 over Haiti, and the Tunisian FA announced that Mondher Kebaier will take charge on an interim basis.
Kebaier previously led the national team between 2019-2022 and will likely be in charge for the rest of the World Cup campaign in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Romelu Lukuku shrugged off fitness concerns to help spare Belgium’s embarrassment as they fought back for a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the World Cup in Seattle.
Lukaku, his country’s record goalscorer, was introduced in the 66th minute and within seconds was involved in the move that saw Mohamed Hany prod in an own goal to bring the two-time semi-finalists back on level terms.

Ange Postecoglou hails Cape Verde after shock point against Spain
Tuesday 16 June 2026 00:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to Cape Verde after the African minnows held European champions Spain to a battling goalless draw in their Group H opener in Atlanta.
Luis De La Fuente’s team could find no way through their opponents’ resolute rearguard and even the introduction of Lamine Yamal with 20 minutes remaining could not stop their opponents claiming an historic point.
Postecoglou told ITV: “The greatest in sport and in football lies in the intangibles and there was something inside those Cape Verde players that wasn’t going to let them yield today.
“We sat here and analysed the teams and you say, well, Spain should really win this comfortably, but we don’t have what they have inside them, in their hearts. There’s a small nation of people now who proudly say, ‘I’m from Cape Verde’, and there’s a recognition from everyone in the world of who they are.”

Ousmane Dembele backed to bring PSG form to national team
Monday 15 June 2026 23:29 , Mike Jones
Didier Deschamps has backed Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele to play a key role in France’s quest for further World Cup glory.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Dembele claimed the prestigious award last September and has since gone on to win a second successive Champions League with his club.
The 29-year-old is yet to make the same individual impact at international level, scoring only seven goals in 59 caps since his debut a decade ago.France begin their Group I campaign on Tuesday against Senegal in New Jersey.
Les Bleus are bidding to reclaim the World Cup following an agonising penalty shoot-out defeat to Argentina in the 2022 final after lifting the trophy in 2018.
“He started early with the national team, but he’s also had quite a few setbacks due to injuries,” manager Deschamps said of Dembele, according to L’Equipe. “At club level, there are matches every three days, and this Ballon d’Or, which he deserves, has brought him into the spotlight.
“He’s focused like everyone else, with the desire to be good and decisive, as he is quite regularly with PSG, even though this season he’s had physical problems that have led him to miss quite a few matches. We’ve given him time, both physically and mentally, to put the Champions League final behind him and move on. But with Ousmane at his best, it will be a real asset for the French national team.”
Kylian Mbappe promises to increase defensive output
Monday 15 June 2026 23:09 , Mike Jones
Kylian Mbappe has vowed to increase his defensive effort following criticism that he doesn’t help out enough in his own half.
According to Opta, the Real Madrid star ranked 1,350th out of 1,490 players in Europe's big five leagues (England, Spain, France, Italy and Germany) with a minimum of 19 league appearances, for combined interceptions, blocks, tackles made and possession won.
And he only managed 0.14 tackles per 90 minutes - the fifth lowest in the rankings.
Speaking to French newspaper La Parisien, Mbappe said: “I need to take the extra step [with my defensive work] because it's something important for the team and I have to do it.
“It will start this time because we want to win, and to win, I'm ready to do whatever because I want to win at all costs.”
Potter delighted with Isak-Gyokeres combination
Monday 15 June 2026 22:51 , Mike Jones
Sweden coach Graham Potter was impressed by the chemistry between strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres after they tore Tunisia’s defence to shreds in a 5-1 victory in their World Cup opener.
Both players scored a goal and created a host of other chances as the Swedes cruised to victory.
“Individually, of course, they are top players but I think together they can be a real threat,” said Potter after the game.
“I think they’ll get better and better the more they play; they complement each other very well. I’m really pleased. We know the quality of the individuals in the front positions but they needed a team to function.”
Nico O'Reilly wants England to start 'all guns blazing'
Monday 15 June 2026 22:30 , Mike Jones
Speaking of Nico O’Reilly, he wants England to start their World Cup campaign “all guns blazing” against Croatia.
Thomas Tuchel’s men are stepping up preparations for Wednesday’s Group L opener in Dallas having arrived at their Kansas City base following a warm-weather camp in Florida.
England are among the favourites for glory this summer and O’Reilly wants them to kick off their World Cup campaign with a statement win against 2018 World Cup semi-final foes Croatia on Wednesday.
“We’ve been acclimatising to the heat, a lot of training and then with the two games where everyone got some minutes,” the Manchester City player said.
“In a way (it’s been like a pre-season) but it’s been intense. Obviously, we need to get ready for the tournament, and it’s been good. I think we just need to go out there all guns blazing and show them what we’re made of.”
Gareth Southgate turned down TV work to ‘keep out of the way’
Monday 15 June 2026 22:11 , Mike Jones
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed he turned down offers for World Cup television work, opting instead to “keep out of the way” to avoid distracting the national team.
This summer's 48-team competition in North America marks the first World Cup since 1994 that Southgate will not be directly involved, following his successful tenure which saw England reach a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final, alongside back-to-back European Championship finals before his departure after Euro 2024.
Explaining his decision in an Instagram video, Southgate highlighted his extensive history with the tournament. “This is obviously a very different tournament for me this one, I have been at the last seven World Cups as a player, as a broadcaster, as a scout and then as a manager,” he said.
“This time I took a conscious decision not to do the TV. I didn’t think it would be helpful for me to be talking about the team.”
He further elaborated on his desire to prevent any potential misinterpretations. "I don’t want anything to be misconstrued or thrown at them in press conferences. So, best for me to keep out of the way.”

Klopp apologises to Nagelsmann over controversial comment: ‘I’m an idiot’
Monday 15 June 2026 21:15 , Jack Rathborn
Jurgen Klopp has apologised to Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann after a comment over his starting line-up in the World Cup 2026 opener against Curacao sparked controversy.
Germany ran out 7-1 winners in the Group E clash, but the former Liverpool manager’s remark provoked widespread debate back home, with the minnows equalising before the heavy rout unfolded.
Seen as a possible successor to Nagelsmann, Klopp, featuring on Magenta TV as a pundit, said in Houston: "luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is picking the team, still.”
Joining Klopp on the broadcast was former Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, who laughed and replied: "Kloppo, we are still in June. You are already in September."

How Cape Verde pulled off an astonishing and unexpected draw with Spain
Monday 15 June 2026 21:10 , Richard Jolly
It may of scant consolation to Spain that it is far from the first time they entered a World Cup among the favourites and got an immediate and unpleasant surprise. In 2014, as now, they crossed the Atlantic as reigning European champions. Then they were World Cup holders, too. Their tournament started with a 5-1 evisceration by the Netherlands. An era ended.
A dozen years on, Spain at least have a point on the board. But has a draw ever provided a greater shock in the World Cup? If so, not many. Historically, anyway, draws seemed anathema to Americans but if anything can convert the doubters to the beauty of a stalemate it is Spain 0 Cape Verde 0. The underdogs did not win in Atlanta, but they were the winners. Perhaps Spain’s stumbles will not matter in the eventual reckoning, just as it did not when Germany conceded to Curacao, but this was a chastening start for La Roja. They have a long unbeaten run, a depth of talent, a host of midfielders. They had no goals.

Jordan Henderson defends England teammate Jude Bellingham: 'We all love him'
Monday 15 June 2026 20:15 , Luke Baker
As England continue to build up to Wednesday’s game with Croatia, Jordan Henderson has leapt to the defence of teammate Jude Bellingham, claiming external criticism of the Real Madrid midfielder is way off the mark.
It has been suggested that one of the reasons Thomas Tuchel wanted veteran Henderson in his World Cup squad was his good relationship with Bellingham, who has developed a reputation externally as something of a tricky character.
“I know a lot gets written in the media and I really find it hard to read sometimes because I just know how big an influence Jude is on this team, how good a teammate he is off the field,” said Henderson.
“And what he gives us is just something really special, he really gives us the X-factor in our team.
“I do think a lot of the media and the stuff that gets written isn’t all true to be honest, or a lot of it is actually untrue. But we all know what he can do, and how much we all love him inside the camp, and I suppose that’s the main thing.”

Ousmane Dembele backed to bring PSG form to national team
Monday 15 June 2026 19:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Spain held by Cape Verde

Germany hit seven but Curacao’s moment justifies new format
Monday 15 June 2026 18:51 , Mike Jones
Kai Havertz scored a brace as Germany opened their World Cup campaign with a dominant 7-1 victory over debutants Curacao in Houston.
Felix Nmecha opened the scoring just six minutes in, but Germany were slightly stunned when Livano Comenencia levelled for minnows Curacao, making their maiden appearance at a World Cup, suggesting that the expanded new format is worthwhile when nations can produce moments that inspire generations.
However, a Nico Schlotterbeck header and Havertz penalty soon restored Germany’s advantage at half-time. A comfortable display saw further goals in the second half from Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav and Havertz as Germany wrapped up three points in their first Group E game.

Sweden’s deadly duo Isak and Gyokeres both off the mark in win over Tunisia
Monday 15 June 2026 18:33 , Mike Jones
One of the big challenges for successive Sweden managers has been how to get the best out of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres on the same pitch, at the same time. Graham Potter’s solution against Tunisia was to play a 3-5-2 formation in which his star strikers were paired together, and it paid off with a 5-1 win in which both players got on the scoresheet – as Brighton’s Yasin Ayari scored two belters from range against his mother’s country.
The forward pair were helped by some poor Tunisian defending and goalkeeping, and there remain some question marks over their link-up play. At one point during the second half, Gyokeres should have played Isak through on goal but the Arsenal striker dallied and when he eventually passed, Isak was offside. Gyokeres’s goal might technically have been an Isak assist, but Isak was trying to score himself and the ball only ran to his strike partner when he lost control under pressure.
So perhaps there is still something to work on to develop a thriving partnership in which they are as happy to pass to one another as to take on the shot. But for Potter and Sweden, just seeing their star duo play together is a huge boost after Isak’s season of injuries. Group F rivals Netherlands and Japan will be wary of the threat Sweden pose.

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi criticises Fifa over impact of USA war at World Cup
Monday 15 June 2026 18:00 , Mike Jones
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi has criticised Fifa, with his team is having a challenging World Cup experience amid the multifold disruptions created by their nation's war with the US.
The Iranians arrived in the Los Angeles area on Sunday from their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, ahead of their clash with New Zealand this evening, while visa issues have plagued members of their delegation and travelling fans have been stripped of match tickets.
“I have felt the tension from the first moment we arrived at this World Cup,” said Taremi. “This kind of tension, it undermines that joy and it undermines the message of Fifa and our people, which is that football brings about peace. I feel like this World Cup could have provided a better atmosphere than it has.”
Uruguay blame Fifa after flight chaos hurts plans for World Cup opener
Monday 15 June 2026 17:45 , Mike Jones
Uruguay’s national team have blamed Fifa after a chaotic start to their World Cup campaign following the delay to their travel from their Mexico base to Miami for their first match.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have travelled to Cancun for final preparations before getting their World Cup underway against Saudi Arabia on Monday but the squad were left waiting as their prepared plane didn’t have clearance to fly to the US. The problem facing the team was reportedly due to issues with paperwork for the aircraft which meant it had not been approved to take the route from Cancun to Miami.
The Uruguayan FA maintained Fifa was responsible, while adding in a statement: “Due to problems beyond the control of the AUF, the departure from Mexico has been delayed. The squad is resting at the hotel. The new departure time set by FIFA is 4.15pm.”
A Fifa statement read: “Due to an airline permitting error in Mexico, the Uruguay national team’s departure from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline has apologised for the inconvenience caused.”
Kylian Mbappe promises to increase defensive output
Monday 15 June 2026 17:30 , Luke Baker

He was restricted to 18 appearances for Manchester City last season and revealed in October that he considered retiring as a player.

Manchester United receive lucrative deal for Amazon ‘All or Nothing’ documentary
Monday 15 June 2026 15:51 , Luke Baker
Manchester United have signed a record-breaking deal with Amazon for an All Or Nothing documentary on Michael Carrick’s team this season.
The behind-the-scenes show marks a new direction from United, who have traditionally been reluctant to grant outsiders access.
But they claim they have agreed the highest fee for any comparable sport documentary for the Prime Video show, which will be broadcast in the summer of 2027, which is likely to be in excess of £10m.
It will help their finances, with the club owing more than £1bn and recently taking out a $550m bond at a higher interest rate.
Shooting for the Amazon documentary will begin in pre-season and will cover the women’s and academy teams as well as the men’s side.
The unwanted Premier League reality exposed by Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne’s World Cup showdown
Monday 15 June 2026 15:34 , Luke Baker
For two ageing greats who contested an epic rivalry over years, the World Cup could provide a last duel. Not Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – or not definitely, anyway, given the number of results required to ensure that Portugal actually do meet Argentina in the Kansas City quarter-final – but Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah.
They have met in the Community Shield, the Champions League and the Carabao Cup but theirs is primarily a Premier League battle. Now for the north-west of the United States not the north-west of England. They meet in Seattle as captains of Belgium and Egypt and arguably the Premier League’s two best players of the last decade.
There are cases for Harry Kane and Virgil van Dijk, one for Erling Haaland that is based on a much briefer stay in the division, but De Bruyne and Salah allied creativity with class, assists with goals, medals with magnificence, individual exploits with collective achievement.
Richard Jolly analyses a final showdown between two Premier League greats:

Fifa urged to remove World Cup VAR official over alleged white supremacist hand gesture
Monday 15 June 2026 15:09 , Luke Baker
Fifa’s discrimination monitor at the World Cup has called for the removal of a video review official after he appeared to make a hand gesture resembling a white supremacist sign.
Shaun Evans, an Australian official, was seen making an "OK" symbol with his right hand in front of his right leg when the official broadcast of Germany's opening game against Curaçao on Sunday cut pre-game to show the team of video review analysts.
Though the game was played in Houston, video officials work in Dallas at the World Cup broadcast centre. The gesture, with thumb and forefinger touched in a circle and other fingers outstretched, was designated a hate symbol by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League in 2019.

Rumours of Sabri Lamouchi being sacked by Tunisia

There are rumours swirling that Sabri Lamouchi has been sacked as Tunisia’s head coach mid-tournament.
The North African side were thumped 5-1 by Sweden last night in their World Cup opener and several sources, including freelance journalist Romain Molina, are suggesting the Tunisian FA have now parted ways with Lamouchi.
The ex-Nottingham Forest boss was appointed after Sami Trabelsi’s dismissal following a last-16 exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.
He has been in charge for just five matches, the most recent two of which have been the thrashing by Sweden and a 5-0 defeat to Belgium in the side’s final pre-tournament friendly.

During a press conference on Friday, Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei – who has been told by the Iranian regime to stop the match if any negative chanting against them is audible – insisted his and the players’ focus would not be on what is going on in the stands.
“We don’t pay attention to any of the hype and anything that goes on around us,” Ghalenoei said. “We are here to represent the respectful people of Iran, be it the Iranians inside Iran or the Iranian diaspora.

Eberechi Eze prepared to step up in penalty shootout despite missed chance in Champions League final
Monday 15 June 2026 12:59 , Luke Baker
Eberechi Eze says he would gladly take a penalty in a shootout during this World Cup, and just sees the miss in Arsenal’s Champions League final as “part of the journey” to improve.
“If called upon, for sure,” Eze said when asked about taking a penalty. “Why wouldn’t I take it? Football is full of everything and you have to try to accept everything as it is, to enjoy it as much as you can. Playing in a Champions League final is where I want to be, it’s what I want to do. We’ll go for it again next season and if there is a penalty to take then I’ll be there again. All the big players have missed big penalties, have experienced these types of moments.
“I’ve had messages from everyone to speak on those moments. For me, it’s not something I wish never happened. I’m grateful it happened. I’m going to grow from it, learn from it and move forward.”
Iranian protesters vow opening match to show anger at brutal regime's war with US

Iranian protestors have vowed to put their national team through “hell” during this evening’s opening World Cup clash with New Zealand in Los Angeles.
Against the backdrop of the war with the US, protesters against the Iranian regime are planning demonstrations both inside and outside SoFi Stadium, including booing the national anthem and flouting Fifa’s prohibition of the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag in stadiums.
“We’re going to make it hell” one lady, who bought a ticket to the game along with many of her fellow activists,” told the Daily Mail. “There are buses scheduled to leave from San Diego, Orange County, and different cities in LA to come to the stadium… we're going to have hell for them.
“We’re going to boo the anthem that is going to play. We're going to turn our backs during the anthem so we will have our flags showing.
“I know Fifa banned it [the flag] but we will make a way to get it in. So we're going to see this flag, not the terrorist regime’s flag.”

Harry Kane labelled 'master of the game' by Croatia star

Croatia defender Duje Caleta-Car described Harry Kane as a “master of the game” ahead of their World Cup clash on Wednesday.
Kane has enjoyed a brilliant season, scoring 66 goals in 56 games for Bayern Munich as they won a second successive Bundesliga title and lifted the German Cup.
Croatia beat England in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals but the Three Lions got revenge at the start of their Euro 2020 campaign, when Kane left a lasting impression on Zlatko Dalic’s side.
“Kane impressed me in our match against England at the European Championship, even though he didn’t score,” admitted Caleta-Car.

Is Kai Havertz the answer to Germany’s biggest World Cup question?
Monday 15 June 2026 10:33 , Luke Baker
There are a raft of reasons why Germany have been so disappointing at recent World Cups, but sometimes the most obvious is the most telling. Germany haven’t had an elite striker since Miroslav Klose, and it has shown.
Arguably, they still don’t. Most football fans probably couldn’t name the player wearing Germany’s No 9 at this World Cup, someone with five caps and one international goal, Stuttgart’s attacking midfielder Jamie Leweling. The question is, can Germany go deep in the World Cup without one of the tournament’s leading strikers?
Lawrence Ostlere suggests that Kai Havertz might just be the solution to their ills:

Gareth Southgate turned down TV work to ‘keep out of the way’
Monday 15 June 2026 10:11 , Luke Baker

“The good news is that Lamine is in perfect condition,” De la Fuente said in a pre-match press conference on Sunday. “He's arrived at this point in the state in which we wanted him to be. He’s fine, just like Nico [Williams] and Victor [Munoz]. They're all available, although some won't play the entire game.
“The doctors say Lamine can play tomorrow without any issues. Not to play 90 minutes, but to play some minutes, yes... The process [with Williams] is similar. They've been working together a lot of days, a lot of hours, and with the relationship they have, they've been happy. They could play, if we think the game demands it.”

Germany hit seven but Curacao’s moment justifies new format

Japanese fans leave their mark off the pitch at World Cup

Japanese fans had plenty to celebrate after their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands at the Dallas Stadium in Texas but once again they will make headlines for an incredible gesture after the full-time whistle of the World Cup 2026 clash.
As usual in sporting events of this size, the stands of the stadium became littered with rubbish, such as food trays and empty drinks cups, but Japan’s supporters remained behind and cleaned up before departing the stadium.
Experts in Japanese culture cite a proverb: "tatsu tori ato wo nigosazu" which, when translated into English, means "stand up, take care of it, without leaving any traces behind" as one reason why Japan supporters tidy up after themselves.

Sweden’s deadly duo Isak and Gyokeres both off the mark in win over Tunisia
Monday 15 June 2026 09:11 , Luke Baker
