Worker dies at Asda supermarket in Peterhead after building site accident

A worker has tragically died after an accident at an Asda supermarket in Peterhead.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the 58-year-old suffered fatal injuries.

It’s understood he may have been the victim of an accident involving a moving digger bucket.

It happened around lunch time next to the Asda store in Peterhead’s Longside Road area.

Construction work has been ongoing at the site where a new extension is being built.

Eyewitnesses spoke of “screams and shouts” and loads of workmen “running in all directions”.

One woman said a builder was knocked off the scaffolding and colleagues were trying to resuscitate him before an ambulance arrived.

Police sealed off the area with no pedestrian or vehicle access to the Asda store which was evacuated.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area.

An Asda spokesman said the company was aware of an incident but had no further details.

A Police Scotland statement said: "A 58-year-old man has sadly died following an industrial incident in Peterhead this afternoon.

"Emergency services were called to Asda at Longside Road at around 12.30pm to assist an injured man. Sadly, despite the best efforts of those at the scene, he was pronounced dead a short time later."

Detective Inspector Sam Buchan, who is leading enquiries, said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are with this man's family at this very sad time. His next of kin has been informed.

"Enquiries are at a very early stage and we are carrying these out in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive. Thank you again to the public for your patience while our investigation continues."
