Construction has begun on a 270-kilometre, high-voltage transmission line across South Australia's Eyre Peninsula with the $300 million project to replace a 50-year-old electricity link.
ElectraNet expects the new line to be energised by the end of 2022, providing a more reliable power supply to the region.
"The current transmission line powering the region is over 50 years old and we have spent a considerable amount of time planning for its replacement to ensure it will meet the region's current and future needs, while also keeping costs as low as possible," Chief Executive Steve Master said.
The cost will be offset by avoiding replacement work on the existing line and annual generator network support payments, resulting in an annual bill increase of just $1 for typical residential customers.
About 300 local jobs will also be generated through the construction phase with traditional owners also consulted to protect culturally sensitive areas along the construction route.
