Work ethic and fundamentals will help Wes Martin succeed

The Washington Redskins have not yet set their offensive line, and it has been mentioned recently that rookie Wes Martin may have an outside chance at getting some playing time this year.

The Redskins selected Martin in the 4th round of the 2019 NFL Draft hoping that his pass blocking skills could help him transition into the league quickly. According to Redskins.com, his leadership abilities will also allow him to stand out in the locker room, as well as on the field.

Martin was the captain of his Indiana Hoosiers team for two years in college, and he is one of four players in school history to appear in 50 career college games.

He also knows what it feels like to be overlooked — Martin did not receive an invite to the NFL Combine — so he knows the hard work that is needed in order to succeed.

“There were a lot of people that didn’t even have me on their list heading into the draft,” Martin said, via Redskins.com. “So being able to show up and show everything I could do would be a good redemption.”

The rookie has already gotten some high praise from Washington coaches, namely head coach Jay Gruden.

“I think mentally he’s a very, very bright guy,” Gruden said. “I just think he has to continue to work on his fundamentals, and he’ll be fine. I like where he’s at.”

Martin describes himself as a “blue-collar guy that’s going to show up every day.” If he can show up and do his job well, the Redskins will be well on their way to building a serviceable frontline.
