Woodland walk with waterfall and hidden castle 40-minute drive from Liverpool

If you are looking for a new place to explore, then this woodland walk with a waterfall and hidden castle will be perfect.

Just a 40 minute drive from Liverpool City Centre, you can enjoy a walk across the 160 acres of Wepre Park in Flintshire, Wales.

It is home to the ruins of Ewloe Castle, which was abandoned in 1277, just over 20 years after it was constructed.

You can discover the Welsh Keep and curtain wall by following the newly built wooden pathway which takes you by a stream and cascading waterfall.

The ancient forest is mentioned in the Doomsday Book and it was acquired by the local council in the 1960s.

The site is very accessible for young families, with prams also able to make a lot of the walk to the castle grounds, however, there are steps leading up what is left of the structure, meaning prams need to be left behind.

Dogs are welcome on the routes, and can often be seen splashing about in the stream.

The Old Hall Café is situated by the car park and is built on the old cellars of the former house that once stood in Wepre Park.

Its winter opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am till 3.30pm, Saturday & Sunday 9.30am till 4.30pm and times man change due to weather conditions.

You can park for free and there are toilets in the café before you begin your walk.

To stroll to the castle and back takes about an hour and a half.

The park has a 4.5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor and is the number one thing to do in Connah's Quay, according to ratings on the site.

Five star reviewers said: "Lovely woodland walks and an interesting castle to visit. Convenient car park at main entrance. Accessible paths and children's play area close to car park."

Another said: "Wepre Park is a woodland park formed from the grounds of an old hall. It contains great walks, woodland, rivers, some pools, a wetland area, a ruined castle and much more.

"In summer there is a visitors' centre that serves food. Even in winter it is beautiful. If you want a peaceful day walking about which is not too taxing this is for you. A take the dog as well - on a lead of course!"
