Women share shocking experiences of sexual abuse and harassment on Glasgow streets

Women have spoken out about the extent of harassment, abuse, and sexual assault they have encountered in Glasgow.

Shocking experiences shared include one thug kicking at a women's car and trying to drag her out when she pulled into a parking space.

Others recounted being indecently exposed and walking with a key between their knuckles in fear of attack.

The testimonies are included in responses to a survey last month and an online interactive map has been set up to register experiences, reports the Daily Record.

Recalling her parking attack in Beith Street in Partick, a woman said: “I worry these men will take out their anger on the next female they come across who is on her own.”

Posting about Queen’s Park, another said “there are common reports of men exposing themselves to women even in daylight.”

Another spoke of Sauchiehall Street: “You are pretty much guaranteed if you walk from top to bottom you’ll receive some sort of harassment.”

One highlighted Govanhill as a hotspot for prostitution and crime.

And at Cop26 women reported their fears walking through the dark in Kelvingrove Park.

Community group Wise Women held the survey for International Human Rights Day on December 10, with Glasgow Girls Club, Commonplace, and Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership.

Responders call for improved street and park lighting, CCTV and extra police patrols.

Wise Women said: “It is women’s human right to feel safe in public spaces.’’
