The Real Reason Sean Penn Missed The 2026 Oscars Despite Winning Best Supporting Actor

Why Sean Penn missed the 2026 Oscars despite winning.

The 2026 Oscars delivered plenty of memorable moments, but one of the night's most talked-about stories involved someone who was not even in the room. Sean Penn was announced as the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in One Battle After Another, yet the actor was nowhere to be seen when his name was read out at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Instead of walking on stage to accept the trophy, Penn's award was collected on his behalf, leaving viewers and attendees wondering why the Hollywood veteran skipped the biggest night of the film industry.

The victory marked a huge milestone in Penn's already decorated career. The actor had previously won two Oscars for Best Actor and remains one of the most respected performers of his generation. Yet his absence from the ceremony soon became a topic of discussion across social media and entertainment circles. While some initially speculated about scheduling conflicts or a personal decision to skip the show, reports soon revealed that his absence was tied to something far more serious than a Hollywood event.

Sean Penn Travelled To Ukraine Instead Of Attending Oscars

According to reports that surfaced during the ceremony, Sean Penn was not in Los Angeles because he had travelled to Europe and was planning a visit to Ukraine. Sources told journalists that the actor had flown overseas with the intention of travelling to the country, although details of the trip and its exact purpose were not publicly disclosed.

Penn's connection to Ukraine is well documented. Over the past several years, the actor has become one of the most high-profile Hollywood figures to support the country following Russia's invasion in 2022. He has visited the nation multiple times, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and even filmed a documentary exploring the conflict and its impact on the people living there.

Because of that long-standing involvement, the actor's reported trip during Oscars weekend did not entirely surprise observers familiar with his activism. While the Academy Awards celebrate the achievements of film, Penn has often shown that he places humanitarian causes above industry recognition.

His absence was particularly striking, given that he was widely expected to win the award. Penn took home the trophy for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson's film One Battle After Another, which went on to have a hugely successful night at the ceremony and even secured Best Picture. Despite Penn's absence, its victory still marked a historic achievement. The win gave him his third acting Oscar overall, adding to the Best Actor awards he previously earned for Mystic River and Milk.

Kieran Culkin Accepted The Award And Joked About Penn's Absence

Since Penn was not present at the ceremony, the award was accepted on his behalf by the previous year's Best Supporting Actor winner, Kieran Culkin. The moment quickly became one of the night's more humorous highlights.

When Culkin took to the stage, he addressed the situation directly with a tongue-in-cheek remark. He told the audience that Sean Penn could not be there 'or didn't want to,' before collecting the Oscar on the actor's behalf. The line drew laughs from the crowd and instantly spread across social media.

The joke reflected a long-standing perception of Penn as someone who is not overly interested in the pageantry of awards season. Earlier in the year, he had also skipped major ceremonies such as the BAFTAs and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, even though he was nominated and won trophies at those events.
