Women dominate teaching sector in North Ayrshire with men making up 8 per cent staff

Only eight per cent of teachers in North Ayrshire primary schools are male, a Freedom of Information request to the council has shown.

Across primary schools, there are 70 male teachers (including probationers promoted and unpromoted) employed across 33 schools.

In primary schools across the authority, there are 730 female teachers (including probationers, promoted and unpromoted ) across 45 schools.

The women make up 92 per cent of the total teachers.

In secondary, primary and special schools there are nine male head teachers across nine schools.

Across secondary, primary and special schools there are 41 female head teachers across 49 schools (including four shared headships).
