Woman swept from rocks into ocean off San Remo near Victoria's Phillip Island

Emergency services are searching for a woman who has been swept into the ocean along a rugged stretch of the Victorian coastline.

Police and paramedics were told she was swept off the rocks near the George Bass Coastal Walk near the town of San Remo about 10:50am.

Victoria Police Air Wing, local officers and Lifesaving Victoria members are all involved in the search.

An Ambulance Victoria helicopter was also sent to the area.

Divers could be seen scouring the waters along the coast in the afternoon.

San Remo, the last mainland town before Phillip Island, is about 120 kilometres' drive south-east of Melbourne. 

The stretch of coast is known for having dangerous waters.

The Punchbowl Rocks in San Remo have been identified as a high-risk location by the Victorian Fisheries Authority.
