Woman slammed for 'stealing mum's thunder' after luxury five star hotel stay

A woman has been slammed for being 'rude' after she complained that her mother didn't appear grateful after a stay in a luxury five star hotel.

Posting on popular forum 'Am I being unreasonable' on Mumsnet, the woman explained how she and her mother went down to London and spend a night in a luxury hotel after her mum received a gift voucher for the treat.

Due to the woman's connection and 'status' with the hotel, the pair were upgraded to a suite but she noticed her mum didn't seem overly happy.

In fact, she pointed out that her mum seemed more interested in the room at the Travelodge.

Keeping anonymous, the woman wrote on Mumsnet: "Just came back from a trip to London with my mum and we spent the night in a five star hotel. We both love London and my mum had a voucher to use a hotel for an overnight stay so thought it was perfect.

"She doesn’t really get to experience staying in hotels so I decided to book the room in my name as I have status with this particular hotel and because of that - we were upgraded to a two bedroom suite from a basic room. It was so opulent (think marble bathrooms, so much space in the bedrooms) and her reaction really surprised me!

"She didn’t say anything about the fact there are two bedrooms and a living room as opposed to a twin room. I asked her, 'have you noticed we have been upgraded', once we were in the room for an hour and she responded with, 'yeah it’s nice' in the most monotone way possible."

The woman fumed: "She acted like this was something she does every time she comes to London and checks in into a hotel.

"We went to visit my sister who was staying at Travelodge and she was more impressed with the Travelodge than the hotel we stayed in.

"AIBU [Am I being unreasonable] to think she was being rude?"

The post received over a 100 comments with many slamming the woman, saying she was the one being rude and some claimed it sounded like she was 'stealing her mum's thunder'.

One said: "I don't see how she was being rude really; she was paying for it."

"What did you want her to do? Compliment the room a lot?", another asked.

A third added: "So her voucher paid for it? She was probably waiting for you to stop being so rude and gush about the room and how grateful you were to her!"

Another called her out: "Maybe she was upset because it was supposed to be her treat for you? And you unintentionally turned it into your treat to her?"

"What a weird post. It's like you want her to gush about 'your status' and how wonderful it is. Perhaps she wanted to treat you for a change and it ended up with you using your clout to get the treat. She might think you are being unreasonable as if what she had planned wasn't hood enough", added another.

One user said: "I think you stole her thunder and her treat! She sounds as though staying at a five star hotel would've have been a real treat for her, and she was pleased to be able to let you share it with you."

And one interjected: "My mum feels very uncomfortable in posh places, she would much prefer a travel lodge to a suit in a 5 star Hotel. We've actually left restaurants before because she was so uncomfortable it was too posh. And she will usually look annoyed when she's somewhere out of her depth even if she's really enjoying herself. I know her though and I wouldn't call her rude. It's just how she is."
