Woman sentenced to lethal injection for starving 10-year-old stepdaughter to death

A woman has been sentenced to death by lethal injection in the US state of Georgia for starving her stepdaughter to death.

Tiffany Moss was found guilty of all counts, including murder, cruelty to children and trying to conceal 10-year-old Emani Moss’s body by burning it in a bin.

Moss, 36, showed no emotion as the jury handed down Georgia’s first death sentence in five years, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

During the trial, the court was told how the burned body of the girl was found in a bin outside an apartment complex in Lawrenceville – on the outskirts of Atlanta – in 2013.

The girl’s father, Eman Moss, who was convicted for his role in the death in 2015 and is serving a life sentence, called police in the immediate aftermath to say he was suicidal and that there was a dead body with him.

He claimed his daughter died after drinking a chemical solution, police said at the time.

In court testimony for Tiffany Moss’s trial, jurors were told that the girl had been denied food and was likely to have starved to death over two weeks. She weighed just 14kg when her body was found.

Attorneys assigned to Moss suggested they would appeal the sentence.

If executed, she will become only the third woman put to death in the state’s history.
