Woman posted smiling selfie just minutes before boat capsized and she drowned

A woman who posted a smiling selfie online to show pals she was enjoying an excursion to a dam, drowned just minutes later when the boat capsized.

Amanda Ferreira's body was found near where the boat turned over at the Jurumirim dam, in the city of Avare, in south eastern Brazil.

According to national newspaper G1, witnesses said that the passengers were not wearing life jackets.

Miss Ferreira, 44, published two selfies on her Instagram account shortly before the accident.

The images show her smiling face in the boat and also another one when she is about to get on, with the sun shining behind her.

According to the local Fire Department, the small boat capsized during the excursion, although the reasons for the accident have not yet been published. All the occupants fell into the water.

Local trader Henrique dos Santos reported hearing cries for help when the boat turned over and rushed to the scene on jet skis with his brother to help the survivors out of the water.

Mr Santos said: "We found the first two teenagers, who were clinging to thermal boxes, floating.

"Then I saw other people. They tried to get on at the same time and the jet ski turned. They were not wearing life-vests.”

Ms Ferreira could not stay above the surface and drowned, her body was found on a stretch of the dam where the depth reaches 20 metres (66 ft).

In a statement, a lieutenant of the Fire Department, Carlos Prandini, said: "The information on the number of people who were on the vessel is inaccurate, but they will be investigated by the Navy to reach the conclusion of the accident."

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. There is no further information about the other passengers on the boat.
