A woman has died after her pet crocodile mauled her to death when she fell into its enclosure.

Deasy Tuwo had been feeding the 700kg animal, which was being kept illegally, at the farm where she worked.

The 44-year-old from Indonesia is thought to have had her arm and most her abdomen bitten off by the crocodile which is called Merry.

Ms Tuwo was head of the laboratory at the pearl farm and died on January 10 before her colleagues found her the next morning.

The animal has now been taken to a conservation site while authorities find its owner, who is believed to be Japanese and also owns the farm.

Hendriks Rundengan from the North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency told BBC Indonesian that officials had tried to visit the facility several times in the past to remove the crocodile but had not been allowed in.

He said: “We've come here a few times but the fences are always locked.”

According to AFP, authorities believe Ms Tuwo's body parts may still be inside the 4.4m-long crocodile.
