Woman jailed over drink and drugs-fuelled police assault in Hamilton

A woman has been jailed for 10 months after assaulting police officers in Hamilton.

Cheryl McKenna kicked and spat as she was being arrested, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week.

McKenna, 43, admitted three counts of police assault following the disturbance in Fereneze Crescent on July 20 last year.

Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said she was being arrested in relation to another matter when she became violent.

The fiscal stated: "As she was being taken to the police van she kicked out, striking one officer on the leg and another on the stomach.

"The accused then started spitting, with the saliva striking the police van door.

"However, she had no Covid-19 symptoms and none of the officers involved had to self-isolate after this."

McKenna's lawyer described her life as "very unstable", adding: "She can stay out of trouble for long periods, but if a problem arises there is a downward spiral.

"At the time of these offences she had taken drink and drugs. She deeply regrets the incident.

"She has removed herself from the Hamilton area."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson told McKenna, now of Cathcart Street, Greenock: "You have previous convictions and have served custodial sentences.

"It's certainly a very poor record and I see no alternative to custody this time."
