Not only do hopeless romantics have to deal with awkward and upsetting trends like 'breadcrumbing' and 'ghosting' - but now also 'zombieing' as it turns out.
This is according to singer-songwriter Mariel Darling, who has taken to TikTok to share the latest trend in the dating scene - and it's not one you want to be involved in.
In a short clip, she said: "Girl, you're being ghosted? I’m being zombied. It's like ghosting, but he comes back from the dead after a couple months and hits you up."
Following this up, she invited her nearly 256,000 followers to share their own 'zombie' experiences.
In response, one user said: "Have you ever noticed that they all zombie you at the same time? Like why are four guys from my past all hitting me up on the same day?"
Another user added: "It's because the girl he thought was better than you realized he's terrible and ghosted him!"
A third user said: "100%. Usually when they've had another fall out with the girlfriend/fiancé/wife.."
One more user added: "OMG yes. But I don't like dead meat, I prefer fresh meat. lol bye."
Trying to lighten the mood, the official Ghostbusters account replied: "Hmm…don’t know if our proton packs can handle a zombie."
It comes after a dating coach shared the dos and don'ts of dating in the modern world.
With over 12 years of experience, he claims to have seen "lots of trends and helped hundreds or thousands of people" when it comes to dating.
Noting how challenging it can be to know when to move to the 'next level' with someone, he urged daters to follow the "three-date rule".
Dating back to the early 1990s, the rule states that if you are seeing someone new, you should wait for a third date before having sex with them.
He said on Reddit: "It's still about right - [but] it depends on how much time you spend with them as well. If it's two short coffee dates, then maybe not. But if you spent a couple of hours together it makes it easier."
Sharing his own experience, he added: "That being said - my last girlfriend we slept together the first night we met. But my wife, we waited a month and a half. So everyone is different."
