Doctor delivers his pregnant wife's baby in lift after speedy labour

A woman gave birth in a lift after going into labour on the way to the hospital - but thankfully her husband is a trained doctor and knew exactly what to do. Déborah Bittar called her husband, Dr Danilo Almieda, when she knew their second daughter was on the way and he rushed home to help her.

The pair, who live in the city of Anapolis, in Brazil, entered the lift in a frantic rush to head to the hospital. But, as the Daily Star reports, it turns out that Déborah was to have a very fast birth and Dr Aklmieda delivered the baby girl, Julia, while the pair were in the lift.

Danilo is an obstetrician, a doctor who specialises in delivering babies and providing medical care to women during pregnancy, so was well prepared for their due date.

But even he was shocked by how soon the baby arrived, and later shared footage from a security camera in the building on his Instagram account.

In the clip, nutritionist Déborah can be seen standing by the lift door as it is about to close - just as things began to escalate.

Déborah is seen placing her hand on her stomach during a contraction and squats as she senses that she is about to give birth.

She then stretches out her arm to prevent the lift door from shutting.

"It was all very fast and incredible," Dr Almedia told Brazilian news portal G1. "I went home and saw that she was already eight centimetres dilated. We were going to the hospital, but Julia decided to be born in the elevator."

The doctor, who has delivered more than 5,000 babies during his career, is videoed dropping Déborah's hospital bags on to the floor and handing Julia over to his wife whilst he cuts the umbilical cord.

Shortly afterwards, Déborah is shown walking down the hall while carrying her newborn baby in a blanket.

Dr Almeida admitted that he was shocked by the speed and location of the delivery.

"Most of the deliveries I have are normal," he added. "So-called 'jet-births' last less than two hours. I've seen others, but this one took me by surprise."
