Woman fumes as husband demands she pay for his £4.5k mates' trip - and pals agree

A woman was left shocked after her husband told her he wanted her to cover the costs of his upcoming holiday to a sports resort with his pals - and expected her to pay around £4,400 ($5,000) from her own personal bank account. His reasoning was that the money used to pay for her emergency surgery a year ago had come out of their joint account.

According to this 31-year-old woman, her apparently gruelling surgery had set the couple back by approximately £2,600 ($3,000). It had taken her a good six months to recover, and it's only been a few short months since she felt well enough to return to work.

The stricken wife couldn't believe it when her husband asked her to pay for the December holiday out of her own pocket and questioned him about why exactly this staggering generosity was expected of her - and was even more astonished by his answer.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Remaa5455, the wife said: "He brought up how much he paid for my surgery and how the money was supposed to go towards vacation savings. I was even more shocked.

"I said the surgery was an emergency unlike the vacation but he insisted the 'outcome' was the same. I refused and told him it was unfair and unreasonable and reminded him we both paid for the surgery, not just him. He got irritated and started throwing around the words 'manipulation' and 'thief'."

Following this conversation, the unnamed woman refused to discuss the topic any further. However, she's now had to put up with her husband blasting her as "selfish" and "ungrateful". He also claims his friends are on his side, and that they also believe she's 'obligated' to help him out, just as he had previously helped her. However, her fellow Reddit users aren't quite as sure.

One person encouraged her to rethink the relationship altogether, advising: "Your husband has shown you his true colours, and they are truly ugly. I can’t imagine staying married to someone like this.

"His vacation is more expensive by almost double and he somehow thinks that is something you should be paying for because his finances helped you with emergency surgery?"

Another urged: "If you can, give him back the part 'he paid' for your emergency and then tell him to consider stopping the shared account. Maybe even stop sharing a life. You don't deserve this and you didn't choose the emergency."
