Man under police guard in hospital after cross-border shooting of two people

Victoria Police believes all parties were known to each other.

Police are guarding a man who is in a critical condition with suspected self-inflicted injuries, following two connected fatal shootings which took place either side of the Murray River yesterday.

Police said the shootings — which claimed the life of an elderly woman and a man — were believed to be domestic violence related.

The body of an 82-year-old woman was found with a gunshot wound at a home at Snowy Avenue, Red Cliffs, in Victoria's north-west, about 12:30pm on Tuesday.

Red Cliffs is about 15 kilometres south of Mildura, in Victoria's Sunraysia region.

About an hour later, police in New South Wales said a shooting was reported on a property at Rufus, where one man was found dead.

Rufus is about 120 kilometres west of Red Cliffs on the New South Wales side of the Murray River.

A 58-year-old man was found at a property near Lake Victoria about 3:00pm, with what Victoria Police said were self-inflicted injuries.

He was taken to a Victorian hospital in a critical condition under police guard.

Victoria Police believes all parties were known to each other, and said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incidents.
