Two children injured in a Melbourne house fire remain in a critical condition as police probe the cause of the blaze.

The boy, girl and a woman believed to be their mother were found unconscious at a home in Mooroolbark in the city's northeast on Monday night.

Emergency services found the woman with injuries to her stomach and she later died.

Forensic officers combed the scene and left with a brown paper bag on Tuesday afternoon.

It is believed they were the home's only occupants at the time of the fire.

The children suffered smoke inhalation and were in a critical but stable condition in hospital, where their father was with them, police said on Tuesday.

The circumstances leading up to the fire are still to be determined but detectives are not currently looking for anyone else.
