Woman dies following police pursuit of erratic driver in Melbourne's west

A woman has died after the car she was travelling in crashed into a roadside barrier in Melbourne's west.

A car was observed driving erratically on the Princes Freeway about 1pm on Thursday, Victoria Police said.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle but it sped away and police lost sight of the car.

Police allege the car crashed into a barrier on Forsyth Road in Point Cook shortly afterwards.

A female passenger died at the scene.

The male driver, 35, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is under police guard.

Police are investigating the incident and are calling on witnesses with further information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
