A woman was killed, and two others hospitalized Tuesday after an apartment fire in Brainerd on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

About 10:20 p.m., officers responded to a fire at an apartment building in the 8900 block of South Justine Street, Chicago police said. A 27-year-old woman was found by Chicago fire officials dead inside one of the units.

A man and woman from the complex, both 57, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment, police said. The woman is in critical condition and from severe smoke inhalation, the man is in good condition.

Other occupants of the building were displaced, but no one else was injured, police said.

The circumstances of the woman’s death and the fire are unknown, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has yet to comment on the woman’s death.

Area South detectives are investigating.
