Woman attacked by Japanese 'Akita-type' dogs while walking on Welsh beach

A woman has been taken to hospital after a pair of Japanese "Akita-type" dogs mauled her leg.

The attack took place on Ffrith Beach, Prestatyn, on Sunday morning, North Wales Police said.

Officers said two other dogs were also injured in the attack and were taken to a veterinary surgery to be assessed.

North Wales Police said the two offending dogs have been seized and an investigation is underway.

According to the Kennel Club, the Akita breed originated in Japan where they were first bred for use as a "fighting dog".

A police spokesperson said the woman walking with her dogs at the time of the attack at about 8.30am on Sunday.

She received a bite wound on her leg and she has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Both offending dogs have been seized, the owners have been identified and an investigation is underway," a spokesperson said.

Sergeant Daniel Ball of North Wales Police is appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the incident and who is yet to speak to us to come forward.

He said: "Both dogs have now been seized and the injured dogs have been taken to a veterinary surgery to be assessed.

"An investigation is now underway and we are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the incident or indeed received any injuries due to the dogs to contact us immediately quoting incident number Y135136."
