Woman attacked by bison in park where date was gored months earlier

A young woman has described the moment she was attacked by a bison just months after her date was gored at the same spot.

Kyler Bourgeous, 30, took Kayleigh Davis, 22, to the same trail in Antelope Island State Park, Utah, where he was attacked on last June to watch a sunset.

Ms Davis ran ahead of her date when he stopped to apply bug spray, and found herself walking past a large bison.

She turned around as she worried that Mr Bourgeous would be uncomfortable seeing the animal.

However, as she walked past the animal, four cyclists came down the trial and spooked it.

The bison then charged her and she began to flee.

"I looked over my shoulder, seeing it get closer - and I looked again and it was pretty much right behind me. Right as I saw it, I flew up in the air 15ft (4.5m)," Ms Davis told the BBC.

She landed on her back and remembered to lay still, as it sniffed at her.

Luckily for Ms Davis, a boy scout leader was nearby.

He distracted the bison which charged him, before it stopped suddenly and just walked away.

Ms Davis, who broke her ankle and suffered a wound in her thigh, had to be airlifted to hospital.

The incident came only a few months after Mr Bourgeous also reported being attacked.

He had just reached the peak of the trail and was coming over the top when he came across two bison.

One of them ran at him and its horn pierced his hip and armpit, fracturing a rib and collapsing a lung.

It took the seasoned hiker months to recover, and he remains anxious of bison.

The couple have said they will continue venturing outdoors together, but will be avoiding the trail in future.
