Woman 'angry' after London to Liverpool train costs £334

A woman was left furious when she realised her train ticket from London to Liverpool cost a staggering £334.

TV presenter Kate Quilton was travelling to Liverpool using Avanti West Coast's service on a "flexible" fare.

The flexible fare means the ticket can be used on any train service on that route.

But Kate, who presents Food Unwrapped on Channel Four, was shocked to see how much the two-hour journey cost.

Taking to Twitter, Kate wrote: "Eh??!! The drive would cost £60. A return flight from London would cost £150.

"And yet the most carbon-efficient way to travel costs this... No wonder we’re up s*** creek without a paddle.

"With a hole in the boat. Without a life vest. In our pants. Discuss."

Paul responded: "You could probably buy a car, fill it with petrol drive it there and buy a sandwich and still have change left. Sounds like a Top Gear challenge right there."

Kaye said: "And that’s standard class....what would first class cost?"

And Amy wrote: "I do this return journey every week at the moment, by car. Its quicker, easier, more convenient and so much more cost effective than getting the train. Shame really."

Despite Kate not paying for the ticket, she said she was still "angry" by the situation.

She later added: "This ticket was bought for me by the company that I am working for today. It’s not my money but it doesn’t make me any less angry."

A spokesperson for Avanti West Coast told the ECHO: "Our advance fares between Liverpool and London start from £17.50 when booked in advance.

"That’s why we encourage all our customers to book early to get the best deals."
