Woman, 88, rescued after car collides through wall and hangs over garden

A pensioner has been rescued from her car after a dramatic crash in Devon. Emergency services were called to a house on Bishops Rise, Torquay, this afternoon (May 4) and found a blue Mercedes hanging over the edge of a garden.

The vehicle had reportedly crashed through the wall of a car port and landed head first in a hedge below. The driver of the Mercedes, an 88-year-old woman, was rescued by firefighters.

Josh Caunter, of Torquay fire station, said the woman was in the Mercedes when crews arrived. He told Devon Live at around 3.15pm: "We safely extricated her from the vehicle by removing the driver's door and assisting her down a ladder.

"The vehicle was an automatic Mercedes. The driver is aged 88 and she is being assessed by paramedics inside now. We have made the vehicle safe and sectioned off the car port."

A neighbour described the pensioner as "very independent". "She's lived there for about 40 years and she's always up and down to the shops," they added.

Pictures from the scene of the incident - taken at around 2.30pm - show emergency services working to stabilise the car. Devon and Cornwall Police officers have been contacted for more information about the incident.
